Journaling reads:
Friday, June 29th
Ghenya, Director of Education for Ekaterinburg (city of 1.5 million people) had planned a tour of a small village outside the city. The tour guide began at a local Orthodox church. After a lengthy history of the church by the guide, Doug asked the meaning of the cross with two strikes through it at the top. The guide was unable to answer his question. She proceeded inside the church where a service was going on, but we were not allowed inside. The priest could not come out and answer Doug’s question. If someone asked you, “What does the symbol of the cross in Christianity stand for what would you say?” Jesus asked his disciple, “Who do you say that I am?” As a true born again child of God, the answers to this question should on the tip of your tongue.
Needless to say, the tour guide was a bit irritated with her lack of knowledge given her responsibilities that day, and all that she and generations before her should know and understand. Actually, the average Russian Orthodox has no knowledge at all. They understand nothing of the bible nor Jesus Christ.
This woman accompanied the team to a local summer camp where children come during the summer for recreation and a time away from the big city. After a few games, greetings, and a meal, the team gave out gospel tracks and whole bibles to the children, youth, and parents. The tour guide was obviously enraged that Christian propaganda was being given to the children. She whispered and raised her eyebrow many times. The wonderful thing is that Ghenya, the education director for the city has full knowledge of our purpose there and welcomes our gifts of God’ Word to the children and any who will receive. Ah, God is so in the miracle business still to this day.
Many children received with glad hearts. Many desired to ask questions about Jesus. Parents listened with intent to hear words never spoken before.
The team was loading the van and quickly approaching time to leave the summer camp. Our hands waved goodbye with hopes of returning again. One young boy ran out from his sleeping quarters, knelt down, folded his hands as to pray and open the track given to him to read. Words can not express the emotion and presence of the Holy Spirit that surrounded those of us who witnessed this miraculous event. The young boy without any English language skills wanted us to know he was praying to receive Jesus. This was actions without words. Communication at it’s best in this land. How much more our actions and hearts speak without a spoken word. Yes, I will see this young man again one day in eternity. We will speak the same love language.
