Dear Tiffany,
These last 3 weeks have been really scary with your diabetes control. The cause was a tummy bug and it messed up your blood sugars for 3 whole weeks. you felt like a pin cushion with all those extra blood tests, at one point they were every 20 mins for 4 hours. It's not too surprising your fingers are now sore. It was so hard keeping you stable, and for several days impossible. You had loads of serious hypos that lasted for 2-4 hours with the pump disconnected and we were force feeding you glucose tablets and fruit juice.. Then there would be the opposite, your sugars would fly high and you went ketotic. This was so dangerous for you and so scary for me. I was up all hours of the night keeping you safe, I'm sorry that this made me an irritable mummy for you at that time.
We did get to spend lots of extra time together though, you were unsafe to go to school. I think we both enjoyed the home schooling time. You were very happy to return to school again today though.
I had telephone advice from Carol, your nurse, she said all the other pump kids were having the same problems. But if you had still been on injections you would have had to go into hospital and be on machines - you would have been critically ill. I am so very very thankful for your insulin pump, and the life that Pinky gives to you.
love from Mum.
