JOURNALING:
After I graduated from college, I worked as an intern at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles. I was part of the Clinical Laboratory Medical Group school of Medical Technology along with Alice, Carol & Dick. Because we were lowly interns we hung out together. Alice & I would make an adventure of going ~shopping~ in the supply closet to stock up lab supplies. Carol & I would meet after work at Bullock’s Wilshire and have pina coladas while watching the fashion show and talking over our day. Dick & I would always go to lunch together and I earned a ~tuna fish~ award at the end of the year because I always bought the avocado stuffed with tuna…every day…for year =) In addition to the fun times, we were also busy learning. I rotated thru all the different areas of the laboratory and realized that I loved Microbiology the most because it was not automated and I got to use MY brain to identify the organisms and let the doctors know what antibiotics to use. We would go up on the floors each morning for rounds and draw blood. This turned out to be one of the most stressful but memorable parts of my day. Because we were located in Los Angeles, we occasionally had celebrities as patients. I remember walking into the room of ~John Doe~ and standing face to face with Jimmy Stewart. I literally dropped my supplies on the floor and was sooooo flustered that I just mumbled ~sorry wrong room~ and had to let someone else draw his blood. Because it was a teaching hospital we also had to deal with some overconfident (read cocky) doctors. When we had to draw their blood for a routine health exam, one resident in particular was incredibly rude to everyone. Of course I ~lucked~ out and got him. As I was getting my supplies ready he copped this attitude with me and asked ~have you been doing this long?~ and I just smiled at him and replied with a straight face ~oh yes, since 8am this morning~ He turned white as a sheet and didn’t say another word til I was done =) Everything I learned during my year of internship, set me on to my future career path. It also taught me that the people you work with are also an important quality. And even tho Alice, Carol, Dick & I ended up at different hospitals after we graduated, to this day we still remain in touch.
