JOURNALING:
Thanks to my high school science teacher, I decided to attend UC Riverside as a Biochemistry major. I chose this college because of its excellent reputation in the sciences but also because of it's location to my home. It was far enough away to give me that ~leaving home~ experience
but close enough that I could get home in an hour if I needed to. When I attended orientation and walked on the campus for the first time by myself I was scared and excited all at the same time. When I moved into the dorms my roommate turned out to be someone that I had met at orientation and had a really fun time with. For some reason, I ended up on the only all girls hall in the dorm. It wasn't something that I requested but I liked the fact I didn't have to share the bathrooms with the guys =) And the best part was that the only all guys hall was across the corridor and we ended up hanging out together. We would go to Shakey's pizza, roller skating, movies on and off campus, the beach, Lake Perris, school dances, Easter sunrise services, have poker tournaments and just hang out and talk and talk and talk. Our room was right in the center of the hall, so we were kinda party central. Most people would meet up and hang out in our room. My roommate and I were known as the pranksters. We would write greetings with lipstick on the boys mirrors, put limburger cheese in their overhead lights and the best was when we got them all together to take a group photo and then plastered them with water balloons and whipped cream. Once we were old enough to drink we would all go to the Cask and Cleaver for happy hour and eat the free munchies which would end up being our dinner. I lived in the dorms my first two years and then rented an apartment with my dorm roommate the last two years. We had several friends in that complex so we were still able to pull off a few pranks!
And YES I did study! These classes were much more intense than anything I had taken in high school, so lots more studying was involved. But after getting a C in one class of upper division chemistry, I knew this was not the field for me. At this same time, I was taking a Microbiology class and I loved isolating and identifying all the different organisms so my career path changed…for the better. My best friend Dave and I ended up in all the same science classes. I will never forget the genetics class he fell asleep and snored in or the fateful physics lab that had us laughing so hard I had to stuff him under desk! I did not have to work during college, but my senior year I got a job in a private laboratory to make sure my career choice was the right one and it was. I spent a lot of my senior year interviewing and deciding on which hospital I would do my internships at.
My college years were my formative years. I became an independent, confident, educated woman. I was ready to start on my career path was looking forward to a bright and happy future. The fact that I met the man of my dreams there, might have had something to do with it too, but more on that later =)
