JOURNALING:
We always had some kind of pet growing up. Various pets like goldfish, baby chicks guinea pigs and water turtles seemed to come and go but our first real pet was our dachshund, Heidi. We got her as a puppy when I was four years old and she lived with us for 14 years. I would dress her up in my doll clothes and push her around in the stroller. She was always so sweet and patient. When Heidi passed away, Friski arrived later that year in my Christmas stocking. He was a peek-a-poo and a bundle of fur and energy. He LOVED squeaky toys and we would have to spell the word ~W-A-L-K~ or he would go bonkers! We also had desert tortoises. Whenever we went out to our cabin in the desert, we would head off in search of them, dig them up and bring them home(which is totally illegal now, but not at the time!) Two of the original ones still hang out in my mom’s backyard, in addition to various babies they have had thru the years. We also had various mallard ducks thru the years. The most memorable one was Herman, who would always chase Friski around the yard. Herman got immortalized in song when he was swooped away by a hawk.
As for my nonfurry friends, my first best friends were girls that lived on our street, MaryBeth C. and Debbie A. We thought we were sooo cool because I had a playhouse to play in, MaryBeth had a pool for us to swim in and Debbie had the biggest swing set in the neighborhood to play on. I still remember the Halloween we recruited another girl in the neighborhood and we went as the Beatles…mop top wigs, black jackets, boots and all! When Todd started school, he became best friends with Mike C who had a younger sister Kathy. Our families started hanging out and taking trips together so we became friends as well. We both loved the movie 101 Dalmatians and we would walk around the house pretending to be Pongo and Perdita, reenacting various scenes from the movie. Every year our families would rent a cabin in Big Bear where we would have major snowball fights and sled runs. Once I started grade school, Debbie R. became my best friend because we were in the same class, same Brownie Troop and went to the same church. We were friends all thru grade school until we moved when I was in 6th grade. Then Kathy K became my best friend because we were both new to the school and knew no one. We remained best friends all thru High School and beyond because we have the same wacko sense of humor, which did get us into trouble at times =)
Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget.
