My faith story started when I was a child..
My mother was raised Methodist, my Dad raised Roman Catholic. When they married my Mom agreed to raise the kids Catholic
Soon after starting kindergarten my parents enrolled us in Sunday school at Church of the Nazarine. There I began my journey into knowing God. We continued there for a few years until my grandmother wanted us to go to Catholic school and receive our First Holy Communion. My brother and I first went to St. Joseph’s in First grade, the church were my parents were married. We stayed there for just a year and returned to public school. Third grade we again tried Catholic school and received our First Holy Communion at St. Vincent’s. My grandmother was thrilled but tuition was high so back to public school we went. As a family we went to church for a year or so..St. Bernadette’s but that also stopped.
We continued on to public school and not much was said about God or church.. My grandmother would ask us to go to church with her when we stayed the weekends with her and we would.
Later as an adult my grandmother and a high school friend Nicole would be my saving Grace. As a young adult there was a lot of turmoil in my life, mostly self inflicted but some from Depression that I had suffered through most of my life. Nicole would be one to get me back to church and start my relationship with God. My grandmother was the person I realized after she died that always wanted me to have a relationship with Him. She wanted me to know the ways of the Catholic church.. I began to explore my faith even more to find out what exactly I believed in and what religion I belonged to. I had been to many different churches in my life growing up with friends so I was comfortable learning about the subtle differences of the Christian faith. But where did I fit in??
I came to realize that as much as I loved my grandmother the Catholic faith was not for me..I did not agree on a lot of the “rules”.. I realized one important thing..it doesn’t matter what affiliation you are with..it’s your relationship with God is the most important.. You can be the highest official in a church and still not have a personal relationship with your Savior.. I go to a nondenominational church where the bible and praise and love are in every sermon. I have started to teach my kids about God and the importance of prayer and having their own relationship with Him.. I am laying the groundwork for them just as my grandmother did for me.
