JOURNALING:
My grandmother on my dad’s side was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union which was concerned about the destructive power of alcohol and the problems it caused their families. They would meet at church and then march into saloons asking the owners to close their establishments. While she was out crusading my grandfather would met with his buddies in their garage for a drink or two. I love that story! They did attend The First Christian Church in Pasadena together as a family. My dad attended the Sunday School program and the church helped their family financially when my grandfather was first stricken with polio. But one day he and his brother were walking to church and they had a penny given to them for the offering. Instead of putting the money in the offering plate, he and his brother spent it on candy. Of course one of the members of their church saw them buying candy and told their mom. Needless to say they got busted. =) When they moved to Glendora they joined my parents in becoming members of Glenkirk Presbyterian Church.
My grandmother on my mom’s side was brought up in a very religious home as her father was a minister in the Baptist church. She was always very involved in church life, especially the Women’s Fellowship, where she would bake or sew items for those less fortunate. My grandfather was a member of the Mason’s which states that each man has a responsibility to improve himself while being devoted to his family, faith, country, and fraternity. They met and were married in the Church of the Lighted Window in La Canada, California. They then attended Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena California with their family. My mom was asked to teach Sunday School when she was in the 6th grade because one of the member thought she was very mature and knowledgeable for her age. In 1940 they moved their membership to Altadena Community Church because their pastor had recently been dismissed. When they moved to La Jolla, they became members of La Jolla Methodist Church. My grandmother continued to be involved in the Women’s Fellowship and often had her picture in the paper for the various charity events she was participating in.
My parents were married in Altadena Community Church. This is also the church where I was baptized. They attended this church until they moved to their new home in Glendora. Because they wanted to worship in the community that they lived, they became members of Glenkirk Presbyterian Church. This was a new church that started out with a chapel and around 50 members and grew into a new sanctuary with thousands of members. My mom was ordained as a Deacon and she taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, where my dad would often help her. They were also very active in the various fellowship groups.
This is my spiritual heritage. And I have learned much by my ancestors’ example. “Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building. Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go to Church, let’s be the Church.” Bridget Willard

What a wonderful story of your heritage and it is true that we are the church, not a place we meet.
