JOURNALING:
Jack Robison Gordinier was born to Carl Jerome Gordinier and Adeline Mae Robison in Boyle Heights California on July 2, 1927. His family life was a typical one for the times, his father worked as a truck driver and his mother stayed home with him and his older brother Carl Jr. But when he was 4 years old, his father was struck with polio and his life changed dramatically. His father was in the hospital for 2 years and during that time his mother had to take in sewing in order to put food on the table. This was during the depression, so life became very hard for them. He attended grade school in El Monte and Eliot Junior High in Altadena California. He was very athletic and at one time held the record from the Pasadena Games in the high jump and the low and high hurdles. He was very musical and played the bassoon in the school orchestra and marching band. This is where he met Clara Doris Tucker. She would accompany him on the piano while he played his bassoon in various music festivals and competitions. They dated until right before high school graduation when his mother insisted that Doris was the one who spiked the punch at a party and she refused to allow him to ever see her again. He graduated from Pasadena Junior College in 1944 with a major in accounting but then enlisted in the Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was a signalman first class on LCI 972 which was stationed in the Pacific and involved in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. While he was at war his mom sent him a letter with a newspaper article about Doris who had just been named the Queen of Job’s Daughters, further stating her reasons as to why she was glad they were not together anymore. Her plan backfired and he wrote to Doris to congratulate her and their long distance correspondence rekindled their romance. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and they were engaged in June 1947. He graduated from John Muir College on June 17, 1948 and they were married on June 27, 1948. They honeymooned in Santa Monica because he had just recently been hired by Union Oil as an accountant and they would not give him any time off. They bought a house in Pasadena and from there started on their life together. Todd Eliot (named after the school where they met) was born on July 27, 1953 on their 5th wedding anniversary and JackieAnn(named after him) was born on December 9,1954. He moved the family to Glendora in 1956 where he started working for Stuart Pharmaceuticals. He remained at this job until he retired in 1989 so he could spend time with his grandchildren and also travel around the world.
This is my dad who taught me life’s most important lessons by his example. He taught me to take time out to play, to love driving a thunderbird with the top off, to travel and explore the world, to live life to its fullest and to treasure each and every moment. And most importantly he taught me that faith and family come first. My dad died in 1991 and I love him so very much and miss him every day.
