On the first day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
A partridge in a pear tree.
The partridge in a pear tree is Christ Jesus upon the Cross. Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge because she will feign injury to decoy a predator away from her nestlings. She is even willing to die for them.
