Fred and Debbie planned the pirate hunt for months, even making a trek to Westport in June to scout the territory. Debbie and Dave stayed Friday night there, to have it all ready for the rest of the family. Saturday morning, when everyone pulled up to the parking lot at the beach, all the children gathered around. Trey quickly found the bottle with the first clue, and Jordan read it to everyone. "Dingy Driftwood Deb" showed up and handed out pirate gear to everyone, including swords, muskets, bandanas, eye patches, mustaches and loot bags with each child's name on them. Everyone headed over the bluff and down to the sand. The hunt ran up and down the beach with clue after clue directing the searchers where to head next. Finally they found "Davy Bones" sitting on a driftwood log. Instructions told them to pull the cord in his hand. As they did, everyone was surprised and awed to see the Jolly Roger flag pop up. The treasure chest was near, they were closing in on an untold fortune. Luckily, there happened to be plenty of plastic shovels handy for the children to start digging. Sand flew and pretty soon they found what they'd been searching for... TREASURE! Inside the wooden chest were dubloons (both chocolate and plastic), jewels, candy necklaces, ring pops and jeweled rings. The genius of the treasure hunt activity was that the older kids were totally engaged by the intrigue of the hunt, and the little ones were thrilled to be part of it and to end up with a bag of loot at the end. With ages from 2-14, they all loved it. The parents had a great time watching the fun and snapping photos.
