The story as I understand it: They were married and in Berkeley for 7 years together. He was a student, first Bachelors and then Doctorate (they were too poor to move!). Mom & dad would plot their routes to conserve gas. Mom budgeted so the meals were under $1 and on Sundays they'd skip other food to splurge on a half gallon of ice cream they'd share
