I admired the work of another volunteer as he tried to match jobs with the skills of our work teams. There were 5 milk crates filled with applications - we could only help a few families during our time.

The journaling reads:

"Dudley H, from the Buffalo, NY area has been serving as the work crew coordinator. He’s been patient with not going out to use his obvious construction skills, but is so very kind on the phone with homeowners. He seems to know the questions to ask and he doesn’t settle for the first answer, but probes to get all the details – “Do you have the materials?” “Do you have funds to pay for them yourself?” “Do you have a way to get the supplies delivered?” (The Volunteer Village has no pick up truck although one has apparently been promised from PDA.)

Each family is asked to complete a simple work request form detailing the extent of damage and giving contact information. Questions ask where the family currently resides, if there is insurance, and if other help has been given. The form is put on a clipboard and triaged into one of five plastic milk crates.

Dudley spoke eloquently at devotions Wednesday, February 22 about the patience and fortitude of these folks. One woman he spoke with has not had contact with us since December 21 – two months and one day, yet she was grateful to hear from us, he said.

I think if I had been in temporary housing since August I’d be mad – crazy-mad."

Note: It's now approaching the third anniversary of this storm, and people are STILL in temporary housing! But God is still calling volunteers to travel to the Gulf to help. He is good!
