This cookbook is a treasure trove of family memories. The dedication from Gram’s sister in the front of the book reads ~To Dode from Janette In Memory of One Happy Vacation May 1941. Wow…wonder what happened on that trip~! =) And best of all there my mom’s simple recipe for jello which is seriously the ONE thing I can make that no one else in the family seems to be able to…boiling water I do well =)

JOURNALING: My grandmother was an amazing cook. My mom and all her sisters are amazing cooks. Then there is me. Apparently some traits skip a generation. But when Gram died, her cookbook was the one possession of hers that I really wanted. Not because I was planning on using some of the recipes but because hidden in Gram’s cookbook were the memories of my childhood. When I flip thru the pages I can almost smell the fresh baked bread, green beans with bacon, tamales, anise cookies and green tea. Her cookbook is also a glimpse into Gram’s life and the time she lived. There are recipes that are tucked inside that have been written by her, my mom, my aunts and her various friends; there are typewritten recipes created way before computers; and there are recipes cut out from magazines of the time. Interesting to see how trends in cooking have come and gone. The Joy of Cooking is the title on Gram’s cookbook but that is also the way that she cooked, with the pure joy and pleasure of cooking a recipe for those she loved.
